As a media company, YOUNG Media embraces creativity in all its forms. Yet one format sits at the heart of everything we do: video. Audiovisual storytelling goes beyond trends and aesthetics. It has the power to inform, educate, and entertain, while bringing our values to life.
Video has become the most consumed format of the 21st century. Today, individuals and companies alike are eager to tell their stories through moving images. Whether to inform, inspire, or connect. At Young Media, our video productions are led by media project manager and producer Diarmuid. With more than ten years of experience in production and technical expertise, he brings both precision and the perspective of a seasoned filmmaker.
Filming can be demanding from start to finish, but for Diarmuid, it’s about finding the part worth savoring. For him, that moment is the shoot itself. As he puts it: ‘Being on set is the worst thing you’ll always want to do again.’
Here are some of Diarmuid’s key insights for excelling in video production:
• ‘Content is king.’ And everything else comes second. You don’t need top-tier equipment if you have a strong idea that works within your means. The heart of any video is its core message, not the tools, trends, or visual tricks used to deliver it. Focus on what you’re saying, not just how you’re saying it.
• ‘You can’t know what you’re breaking if you don’t know the rules.’ Learning the basic rules of filmmaking gives purpose to the moments when you choose to bend or break them. One key guideline is the 180-degree rule, which requires the camera to be on one side of an imaginary line between characters to maintain spatial clarity. Crossing that line can feel disorienting, an effect that, when used intentionally, can add creative impact.
• ‘Don’t leave it up to chance.’ Unless you’re working on something you know inside out, solid planning is essential. A strong production plan saves time, budget, and energy by clearly outlining resources and defining when and how they’ll be used, keeping the entire crew aligned from start to finish.
• ‘Limit is freeing’ Always ask yourself: “Can I actually do this with the resources and skills I have right now? If not, what realistic steps can I take to get as close as possible?”. Working within real constraints helps avoid unnecessary frustration, boosts creativity, and often sparks more inventive, problem-solving-driven ideas.
Great videos draw in great audiences and can become a powerful asset for organizations. Achieving that impact takes more than vision and passion; it requires a strong grasp of the fundamentals. Practice is where it all comes together, and that’s exactly what YOUNG Media believes in.
