In today’s professional world, networking plays a crucial role in business development, yet it is still often overlooked or dismissed as unnecessary. At Young Media, however, we understand that meaningful connections are what truly drive businesses forward. With just a few simple steps, anyone can boost their visibility in the market and strengthen their professional relationships.
Networking as a growth strategy
Networking offers a range of clear benefits, depending on the objectives a company aims to achieve. For us at Young Media, three key reasons stand out.
First, networking creates valuable opportunities to increase brand awareness, which is a prerequisite of business growth. Second, building diverse connections is particularly important for a media company, as it expands the pool of people we can engage and collaborate with in our productions. Finally, networking lays a strong foundation for partnerships and long-term collaboration.
Our networking tips:
“Where do I find the right people for my network?”. If you are just establishing yourself in the media industry, this is a perfectly valid question to ask. Based on our own experience, here are a few practical tips to help you get started:
• Attend industry events. You can usually access side events, panels, or networking drinks without needing a full conference badge. Instead of trying to meet everyone in the room, aim for three to five in-depth conversations. Quality always outweighs quantity.
• Join communities. While often underrated, building a broad network of contacts is especially valuable in the media industry. Explore film collectives, podcast communities, Discord groups, and alumni events (even those from schools you did not attend). Being present in the right circles increases your visibility and credibility.
• Strategically use LinkedIn. Follow relevant professionals, engage with their posts, and send short, specific messages when reaching out. Personal and intentional communication makes a far stronger impression than generic requests.
• Offer value – don’t just ask for jobs. Your reputation is built over time by contributing something useful, not by only making demands. Share suitable content, connect people within your network, offer feedback within your area of expertise, or invite others to collaborate on your projects.
Having a broad network is essential for both individuals and companies seeking success in the media industry. While the approach to networking should align with your primary goals, the core principles remain the same: start small, be intentional, and watch your network become one of your most powerful business assets.
At Young Media, we tailor our networking strategies to fit each project’s goals and context. To strengthen our presence in the media industry, we actively organise and participate in a variety of networking events. For example, our recent VG Visie event gave us the opportunity to deepen relationships with partners while also promoting the magazine we’ve been developing over the past few months.
