The path into media, whether photography, design, social media, music, or film, is often unclear and highly competitive. At Young Media, we recognise that entering this industry can be particularly challenging for young creative professionals. By regularly hiring interns, we see just how much talent is out there, and how difficult it can be to choose only one candidate. That is why we want to share some insights for entry-level creatives, with the hope of giving them more opportunities to be noticed.
The challenge
Easy access to the internet and the rise of remote work have intensified global competition and raised expectations, even for entry-level roles. Rapid technological developments have further transformed the job market. While many companies now rely on Artificial Intelligence for basic creative tasks, they continue to seek highly experienced candidates for roles that AI cannot yet replace, reinforcing the experience paradox that makes it difficult for newcomers to break into the industry.
Tangible advice from Young Media for entry-level creatives:
All of this may sound intimidating, but if the creative industry is truly where you see yourself, nothing should stop you from trying to enter it. To push through these challenges, young professionals must learn how to stand out in the crowd.
• Build projects, not just CVs. Personal or collaborative projects show initiative and problem-solving better than titles alone.
• Be adaptable. Media roles are constantly evolving; flexibility is a strength.
• Be result-oriented. Focus on clear goals and work consistently towards them to achieve desired outcomes more efficiently.
• Ask questions. Curiosity signals engagement and growth potential.
• Don’t wait for permission to create. The strongest candidates often already act like professionals before being hired.
• Follow the companies you admire. Like Young Media, many companies hire interns, which can be a valuable first step into the industry.
Entering the media industry can be challenging, but it’s definitely worth it. At Young Media, we regularly welcome new talent and are always glad to see motivated and curious individuals apply. With enough determination and enthusiasm, opportunities will come and dreams can be turned into reality.
