For a while, we have been making our way through the podcast industry, from Met Grenzeloze Ambitie to Ebbe & Bibi. During this time, we’ve learned a thing or two about why podcasts are great, and, well, how to make them great. Let us share this knowledge with you!
Why do you want to listen to podcasts?
Compared to other media, the conversational format of podcasts creates a sense of intimacy, letting listeners feel part of a conversation and fulfilling the fundamental human need for connection. Rather than simply learning new facts, listeners are immersed in personal stories.
On top of that, podcasts offer a more extensive source of knowledge, instead of fragmented information pulled out of context. They often feature experts or guests with diverse experiences, which helps to paint a broader picture of a subject, even when it’s a niche one.
Lastly, podcasts are easily accessible. As long as you have a phone, an internet connection, and headphones, you can enjoy your favorite conversations anywhere, at any time. These factors keep podcasts at the top of the media landscape.
How do you make a great podcast?
Since more and more people strive to start their own podcasts, it’s worth knowing how to make yours stand out. Based on our experience, here are a few tips:
• Lean into authenticity. Your listeners should feel like they’re part of a genuine conversation. This sense of honesty and trust is what keeps them engaged.
• Stick to a format. Consistency is key, so choose a structure that works best for you and follow it. There’s always room for experimentation, but approach changes thoughtfully.
• Prioritize sound quality. It doesn’t cost much but makes a big difference. A quiet room, a decent microphone, and a bit of editing will do the job when you’re just getting started.
• Be prepared. You don’t need a full script, yet mapping out the flow of your conversation helps reduce rambling and keeps you focused.
• Find your signature. It’s hard to find a truly unique topic today; however, your perspective can provide a fresh take on existing subjects. Look at things from a different angle and you might discover something no one has explored before.
All in all, podcasts are a medium of the future. They are a powerful way for people to share their opinions and connect with one another. At Young Media we also have a lot to say, which is why we’re investing in podcasting with new, original stories and high quality content.
